WHO ARE WE?

Camp Refuge is a summer camp for students that have finished the 6th-12th grade. This will be our 14th year in existence, and God has done some amazing things in lives of students through this camp. Our hope is that all who come would be affected and changed by the power of the gospel of Jesus.

John Durham
Evening Speaker

John is the Lead Pastor at Highland Baptist in Waco; previous to that he was Lead Pastor at First Baptist Irving, and before that the Student Pastor at First Baptist Houston. John and his wife Jennifer have two kids and three grandchildren. He has degrees from Baylor and Luther Rice Seminary and an honorary doctorate from DBU. John enjoys biking, kayaking, hiking (climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro), Cajun food, working out, reading biographies, and seeing lives changed through the Gospel of Jesus.

Case Smith
Morning Speaker

Case Smith was born in Starkville, MS, but has called Waco home since he was just two months old. A Midway High School graduate (‘13), Case went on to attend Baylor University, where he played baseball and discovered his passion for church ministry. He graduated from Baylor in 2017 with a B.A. in Religion and began serving full-time at First Woodway, leading the recreation ministry. In the fall of 2022, Case stepped into the role of College Minister, helping college students find and follow Jesus. He also earned his M.A. in Christian Ministry from Truett Seminary in 2023. Case and his wife, Danelle, love raising their two kids, Raleigh and Summit, and enjoy serving the Lord together.

Art Wellborn & Jessica Bird Lackey
​Worship Leaders

Art Wellborn serves as worship pastor at First Woodway Baptist Church. Art has served as worship pastor since May 2023, but he has served in various worship ministry roles at First Woodway since he was a high schooler in the student ministry. He graduated from Baylor University in 2015 with a degree in Church Music. He has traveled with his band leading for various events since he was in high school. Some of his favorite weeks of the year are spent at church camp, because it was at his high school youth camp that he felt the Lord clearly call him into worship ministry. 

Jessica Bird Lackey serves as the worship associate at Highland Baptist Church. Jessica has been leading worship for quite some time at Highland and in other powerful ministries throughout the state of Texas. You may even recognize Jess as a familiar face because she has been a part of leading in worship for Camp Refuge for the past 3 years and we are excited to have her back as one of our worship leaders for 2025!
